Communication Design
During the Communication Studio, students explored design history and thinking, branding and colour, typography and image, and composition and production through lectures, discussions, and short assignments. Strong focus was placed on developing design software skills in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop) to create original layouts/brands, beautifully controlled typography, and custom-edited images.
LogoMorph Branding Project
Students developed an animal logo for an original business concept of their choice through an iterative process of abstraction and refinement.
Social Media Typography Post
Students chose song lyrics or notable quotes to design social media posts. This involved selecting fonts, creating an effective typographic arrangement, and developing a distinct and conceptually appropriate aesthetic for their subject matter.
Final Project
To flex their newfound design skills, students were invited to create a unique, self-directed work of communication design of their choice in the final week of the studio which used complex design composition and several design softwares and/or production methods. For some, this involved print design for a book, calendar, album, poster, or zine. For others, more illustrative and conceptual work was explored. Given this format variety, students were exposed to various design challenges through the experiences of not just themselves, but also their peers.”
