Yurah Cho
This watercolour painting is inspired by my favourite traditional Korean folktale, The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon. I painted one one of my favorite scenes from the tale which was when the brother and sister was running away from a tiger who disguises to be their mother, by grabbing the rope that god gave to them. I recreated this scene by using my creativity and imagination while keeping the original story in mind. The watercolour medium helped create a soft, dreamlike feeling that fits the magical nature of folktales. I tried adding depth through using dramatic contrast by adding bright stars and make the moonlight shine. Most importantly, this art piece connects to my cultural background with my personal artistic style since as a second generation Canadian, I feel pride making connections with my Korean ethnicity. By painting this artwork, I finally felt like I totally expressed my inner thoughts and imaginations by recreating one of my favorite childhood folktales into my art style.
