Alyssa Liu

This piece symbolizes how many women are reduced to nothing but objects, used by the harmful parts of society. She sits on top of a weight scale that displays 0, feeling as though her worth is nothing. Her right eye is scarred, and a tear flows out, representing her reluctance, suffering, and the pain of being treated like an object rather than a human being. Her left eye is open, representing her need to keep moving forward through the pain of being treated so terribly in a sexist society, as shown through her red eye. She has many keys tied around her neck, showing that she is choking under the pressure of life, but doesn’t know which key will help her out of difficult situations. There are many insects, as well as Venus flytraps, symbolizing that although there are bad people like insects, there are also good people who help and support women, just as Venus flytraps catch insects. If we help one another, we may find the strength to walk into a safer and better future, because after we rise from the bottom, we can finally reach our true potential.
