Smoking Lady: With this portrait I really focused on loosening up my style and adding more moving parts to the portrait. We’re seeing the subject looking in the mirror, getting ready. This unique point of view is what ultimately led me to submit this piece. The details of the mascara, hair curlers and smudged lipstick make this painting more interesting, adding more to the story. I spent a lot of time working on the semi-transparent scarves in her hair. The colours of the scarves were fun to play with since the background is so bright. The playful colours in the painting were very fun to work with, adding to the experimental aspect of the artwork. I used oil paint on a 20 by 16 inch canvas.
