JAI Cohort 02
Soft-Sculpture & Animation
This Junior Art Intensive, like many other aspects of our lives, has been restructured as the result of the Covid-19 virus. Yet, while facing a new world of uncertainty and instability, the young artists who took the virtual program were able to produce artwork with positive creativity. I am inspired by the students of this course, their commitment, humour, and ability to look at this new world with continued curiosity. Art education may not be a cure, but at times it can be a treatment of monotony and misery. In just two weeks these students were able to create a colourful expression of their perspectives and experiences. Let’s celebrate their work and congratulate them!
Weronika Stepien, Instructor
Painting & Drawing
Instructor: Cath Hughes
During the week-long Painting & Drawing studio, students explored scale, colour, portraiture, abstraction and realism in drawing and painting. As students worked from home, they were encouraged to push their creativity through studies of the ‘overlooked’ and the still life around them. Furthermore, they were prompted to reflect upon the power of Art to raise awareness about human rights issues, and express their thoughts and feelings about their lives in times of Covid-19 through their creative work. We are so proud to share the outstanding work produced by this talented and insightful group of students. Congratulations, JAI Class 2020!

Mena Cusano
Mena Cusano, "Sculpture on Paper", 9 x 12 inches, Graphite on paper. I love this piece and I think it holds this almost whimsical feel to it. I enjoyed drawing something that I created, it is also much different drawing something in front of me. It is more dynamic and it is easier to notice shadow and highlights.
Mena Cusano, "Shattered Glass", 8.5 x 11 inches, Acrylic. I was very calm when I made the colours and painted this painting and I feel like that is reflected in the result with the crisp lines and the somewhat visible shapes. I think that the half-circles can be represented as floating ideas of dreams circling our world.
Mena Cusano, "COVID Times Are Tough", 9 x 12 inches, Graphite on paper. I quite like this portrait and the shading. The figures in the background were drawn to represent people (more specifically, friends) in my life who didn't really stick around or began to drift away throughout the Corona isolation.
