Erin O’Neill

“Art is a space for me to have fun and create. For years I have aspired to be a cartoonist and illustrator. I have always had a deep appreciation for all sorts of animation and storytelling, and thought it would be really cool to have an opportunity to tell a story of my own. These past few weeks have encouraged me to shift gears and work with a medium that I'm not too experienced with, and to create things other than illustrations and cartoon characters. These pieces are examples of how I have developed as an artist and show my learning process during a time when I was eager to have fun.”

Surface Preparation

“Whenever I shift my weight in an attempt to not contract frostbite in my freezing bedroom, my wheely chair screams like a dying blue whale. Despite my best efforts, the ungodly humidity and heat from the outside world still seeps in and I am forced into a painful cycle of hot and cold with my uncooperative air conditioner. Honestly I dont hate my space; I've worked hard for years to get my hands on the nicest, most essential stuff for an artist. I got a bulletin board on the wall to my right with pins and little souvenirs of things that inspired me to draw in the past, but are only reminders of why I try not to think about middle school. In front of me is a messy shelf with old stuffed animals, candy, and art supplies that I haven't thought about for years. Around the computer on my desk is some candy, the pen for my drawing tablet, a kneaded eraser, pencils, paper, lotion, out of battery wireless headphones, a broken Nintendo DS charger, and some nicknacks, y'know, for decoration. Yes, in my space I only keep the bare essentials. On the shelves behind me, for example, there are Composition books that have no purpose, pencil cases that have no purpose, empty cardboard boxes that have no purpose, and candy. Everything I need to be happy, productive, and most importantly of all, organized.”
