Artist Statement
“I have always been a creator; whether it was painting, doodling or moulding sticky tac into statues, I have spent most of my life making things. I've always desired to create increasingly unique and technically skilled artwork, which fuels my passion for art and helps me develop as an artist. I mainly work with acrylic on canvas or paper and digital mediums - I especially enjoy painting works with macabre themes. I also use colour themes to experiment with emotional responses to my pieces. These assignments were inspired by dreams, literature and other artists' works. I most often use creative writing and literature as a tool to inspire my imagination. My writing typically draws from my own identity, thoughts and feelings. Consequently, my pieces are reflections of myself in different lights.”
Composition
Usurpation / 18” x 24” / Acrylic on Canvas “The ram-crowned woman sits high upon her throne, heavily jeweled with kingfisher feathers and pearls. Clawed fingers tighten in grip as a sharp swipe vibrates in the stillness and the reddish light shines bloody against the blade. It is soundless in the halls, omitting the muted padding of her walk; the guards are lifeless in quiet, and the figure is silent in fear. She takes both hands to the blade and raises it swiftly.”
Collage
Missing Idols / 15” x 20.5” / Acrylic on Paper / The concept of “Missing Idols” is the refutation of idolatry and worship. Humanity narrates its past from parts found and parts missing, learning from the absence of objects, the living gods and history as it is etched in stones throughout the world. The missing pieces record that all is not known of our idols and the objects of our past.
Mark Making
Eight Suns Remaining / Acrylic on Paper / 7” x 8” / In Chinese mythology, there were originally ten suns, each which took turns crossing the sky. One day, they all came out at once and scorched the earth red with fire. The archer 后羿 was hired to rein them in, but when they refused to leave the sky, he shot them down one by one. This piece depicts a burning terrain as the suns’ shines are distorted in the background.
